Amazon Prime kinda started out as free shipping service for Amazon products. If you buy into a membership with Amazon Prime you get 5 (this may later include more) services. Currently you get 1. Amazon Prime, 2. Amazon Video, 3. A Kindle-Books service allowing you to get a book a month, 4. Unlimited Photo Storage, and 5. Ad-free music. Last year they got what is seen as a big victory by grabbing the hosts of Top Gear from BBC. There are also rumors of a streaming service and possibly Amazon inviting other content producers into the fold so that it can eliminate smaller content producers or make it harder for rivals to enter the fray. (Basically they like everyone have plans for world domination in streaming, but the plans they have may come to fruition.) Amazon Video has already started to make its own original content. (The man in the High Castle) then it will work on a new show with the hosts of Top Gear. Amazon Video provides a bunch of free movies and shows. You may also rent more current movies and TV shows that are not included.
Now there is a thing called the “Stream Partners Program” It lists 30 partners on Prime Video. The 2 big ones are Showtime and Starz. It is rumored that there will be more and that negotiations with HBO are in the works
It has a 30 day free trial and I then 99$ a year. You can’t pay month to month.
I am of the opinion that Amazon Prime and Netflix are extremely similar. So despite knowing some people that have both I would recommend people choose one. (Whichever works best) If you are the opinion that they are similar and would rather spend the subscription fee on another service such as Hulu or Sling, I think that Amazon Prime is going to improve at a much quicker rate than Netflix will. So, get whatever works for you, but I think that Amazon is going to fulfill the same needs as Netflix and with Amazon Prime’s free shipping and future growth I think that given the choice, its the one to make.
